Stay at Home Saturday: The Recipe for a Better Day

I have a confession to make: many times my devotions go to the back burner on Saturdays. Often, my husband and I have stayed up late the night before, we're tired from the week, and it's a lazy morning. Usually, if I do them at all, I do my devotions in the afternoon while the kids are napping. This isn't necessarily a terrible thing, but I read something this week that showed me a better way.

My mom gave me a lovely book a few weeks ago, called Jesus Calling, by Sarah Young. It's a devotional book for every day of the year. It is written as if Jesus is speaking directly to you. I started late so I've been reading several at a time. Yesterday I read the one for January 12 and I'd like to share part of it with you:

Let Me prepare you for the day that stretches out before you. I know exactly what this day will contain, whereas you have only vague ideas about it . . . You'd feel more prepared if you could somehow visualize what is on the road ahead. However, there is a better way to be prepared for whatever you will encounter today: Spend time with me . . . I will not show you what is on the road ahead, but I will thoroughly equip you for the journey. My living Presence is your Companion each step of the way.

Are you a working mother who runs all of her errands on Saturday? Are you a woman who spends each Saturday trying to clean the house and grocery shop? Maybe you are a mom who spends each Saturday driving from one ball game to another birthday party. Or perhaps you're like me, who spends most Saturdays at home with family, doing the occasional grocery run and cleaning sprint around the house.

Wherever you find yourself this Saturday, can I encourage you to begin your day with the One who created it? He already knows what you'll face today and He has the map to guide you from morning till bedtime. He goes before you and walks beside you each step of the day. Let Him be your Companion and your travel guide.

Great post! We had a day full of plans and then the snow cancelled all of them. We could have felt cooped up inside, but instead we've have had one of the best family days! I thought I had a vague idea about my Saturday, but it all got changed. I like that He's given me peace and joy for what this day contained. His "roads" are always better than our own.

I have "Jesus Calling", too! Even my boys like hearing these short devotions in the morning. So glad you shared that with everyone!

This is definitely a SAHS with the weather and what recipe could be better! Could you hear me amening all the way at your house? Speak it, sistah! I'll have to check out that devo. Thank you!

Wish you'd called me with this one this morning! I missed the boat here, but I'm encouraged.

Great post, Amy! I tend to give myself the 'early morning' off on Saturday mornings. The best part, my kids were up at 6:10 this morning! Might as well have gotten up. :)
