Savory Saturday: Need an Idea for Sunday Dinner?

Growing up, we hardly ever ate out after church on Sundays. It was a given that after church, we'd all return to our house for a home cooked meal that my mother had made. As a child, I hated eating at home. For some reason, a trip to a buffet line with heated up frozen food sounded so much more pleasant and enticing than a nice, homemade turkey dinner. No matter how hard we begged sometimes, my sweet mother would always put a roast or a turkey in the oven on Sunday morning and when we would open the front door after church, a wonderful aroma would greet us.

I don't know how she did it! Making a huge meal every Sunday with five children to take care of! Now with only two small children, I find it so much easier to go to Panera after church and then return home to give naps. Once in a while, though, I do make a nice meal to eat after church. It is a wonderful tradition to start, and I really do hope that the older my children get--and when the crankiness and nap-needing winds down--the tradition of eating a nice Sunday meal at home each week will begin.

With that being said, Sunday we are going to Panera, but in case you want a recipe for an easy meal that I grew up on and that I make for our family often, here is a good one. I will warn you that if you make this, you have to gauge your own measurements. This is one that I find myself adding more or taking a little away, but it is a good one:

Beef Stroganoff
2 pounds beef tips
1 can golden mushroom soup
1 packet Lipton Onion Soup Mix
1/4 Cup cooking sherry (more if desired)
1/2-1 Cup Sour Cream
Egg Noodles
*Cut beef tips to desired size and place in dutch oven pot. Add soup and onion soup mix and stir. Add sherry and stir over low heat. Let simmer until done. Add about 1/2-1 Cup sour cream for thickness and flavoring. Cook egg noodles according to directions. Serve beef tips over noodles.
(If you want this recipe to be more "liquidy", you can use 2 cans mushroom soup instead of one). This meal is great served with Sister Schubert's yeast rolls. A lot of carbs, yes....but it's Sunday, right?! They are perfect to help soak up the yummy sauce. Enjoy!

Sounds great! I grew up with a similar version, but my mom used ground beef, a big no no, according to Martha Stewart. I will have to try the beef tips next time. It is still one of my favs. from childhood. I love that food brings back good memories.

David and I grew up the same way also - wonderful, homemade lunch after church on Sunday. It is a great goal - but I have to think there weren't as many yummy restaurant options for lunch on Sunday back then.

My family would like this - I'm going to try it!

I grew up with that same recipe...but we ate it over rice! (maybe that is the southern California way! Scott grew up in Virginia and had it with noodles!!!)

I am going to like Savory Saturdays!!

MMMMM! I LOVE the sounds of this recipe! I'll try it for sure.

ps - is a dutch oven the same thing as a crockpot?

Sounds good! What is a dutch oven?

Yummy! Thank you Donna! I will try it. I've never bought beef tips before. Are they with the rest of the meat?

Beef tips are with the rest of the meats like steaks.

A dutch oven is a big pot. The kind of pot you'd make a big stew or chili in. Hope this helps!
