Training Up Tuesday: Food for the Soul

I'm always looking for solid ways to share Jesus and His Word with my 2 year old. This week at Bible Study, one of our friends shared a great Bible for children~The Jesus Storybook Bible: Every Story Whispers His Name by Sally Lloyd Jones. The website mentions it is for ages 4 and up, reading level of ages 9-12 and suitable for the WHOLE family.

Our friend also shared her personal application which was great and helpful:
After [our Bible Study leader's] encouraging talk yesterday, I was inspired to try to teach my children the completeness of God’s story, rather than just isolated stories (which is fine, too!) . So, I started again at the very beginning of this book with wide awake and captive brains (ie- read to them at the breakfast table). That’s when we’re most calm and alert, after all. Dinner time would not work for us.
I have to say it was like a morning devotion for me as well. We went slowly. My 2-year old was more interested in the beautiful illustrations, so we talked about the things that God has made. By the third page, my 4 year old was ready to hear the whole book. You’ll see why when you read it.

A side note – the illustrations in the book are gorgeous. Some of them are easy to replicate, like the birds and the flowers. You can cut out pieces of construction paper and have your kids glue them together. It makes a fun little craft to go along with the stories. We haven’t read this bible book in a long time, but my 4 year old still remembers when we made a family of birds over a year ago. :)

Check it out and let us know what you think!

What to do with all those shopping bags!

I must admit, I haven't done as much shopping lately because we're trying to cut back. But I have saved lots of bags over the years. I use and re-use them until they're worn out. I put all my bags in this pink bin. Not very organized, but just a place to throw them in a hurry. I noticed that some of the handles of these bags are ribbons. Oooooh, la, la! An idea popped into my head. I LOVE a ribbon! So, here's what I did with them... Untie the knot and pull it through the hole.Iron ribbons.I used the letters to paste on envelopes or packages for the first initial of a name. It adds a little flair. Voila! A cute little package. This only took minutes to finish. And, I felt very resourceful! I'm gonna take this bag apart next...Be creative. The possibilities are endless. Don't let those ribbons go to waste. A ribbon makes everything a little sweeter! Enjoy your Monday! God Bless.

Safeguard Your Spouse Sunday~Marital Advice

Want some unsolicited marital advice? Well, you have come to the right place! haha! Please don't misunderstand--I have only been married for four years (almost five), so we are still in the infant/toddler stages of marriage. And I certainly don't pretend to have all the answers. I am not a licensed counselor, either. BUT ... over the years I have received some great advice from folks, and I wanted to share--and to hear from you on any great marriage tips that you may have.

Here we go ... in no particular order ...
  • Keep your husband happy. I'll start with one that always makes me smile ... if not turn red! LOL! It's from a former co-worker who is older and wiser. This is what she says, ladies: "If you keep your husband happy in the bedroom, he'll be happy in all the other rooms in the house!" I'll leave it at that!
  • Forsaking all others. Many of us used this phrase in our wedding vows, but did we truly understand what we were saying? What does it mean to forsake all others? To me, it means that our spouses should come second only to Christ. That means that our spouses come before our parents, our siblings, our friends--and yes, even our children. That one may be a surprise, but it's true. Our children are a product of our love for our spouses--and one day, our children will be grown up and out of the house, which will be occupied with just us and our husbands. So our relationships with our DHs should come first, and vice versa (in case there are any men reading this). I was reminded by a quote I saw in a friend's photobook recently that went something like this: "The best thing a father can do for his children is to love their mother." One other thing that comes to mind when I think of "forsaking all others": the women on the Titanic who refused to get into lifeboats because they did not want to leave their husbands. Perhaps they did not understand the gravity of the situation, but it's just something that comes to mind.
  • Ask for and be free with forgiveness. Some of the most important words in any relationship, in my opinion, are "I'm sorry. Will you forgive me?" And "I forgive you." Of course, "I love you" is way up there, too, but seeking and granting forgiveness is so important.
  • Ladies, respect your husbands. During our premarital counseling--which I highly recommend, by the way--we learned that men need to feel respected, and women need to feel loved. Do you respect your husband? How do you speak to him? I have to be careful on this one--in my tone of voice and how I word things, especially when I am stressed out. What can I do to make my husband feel respected in our home and when we are out? I try to be aware of this and try not to question him in front of others. I think showing respect means different things to different people.
  • Men, love your wives. Here's one for the men, and it comes straight from God's word: "Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her" (Ephesians 5:25). Many times, women get stuck on the Scripture about wives submitting to their husbands. But we mustn't overlook what husbands are called to do: to love their wives as Christ loved the church. And ... gave Himself up for her. What a sacrifice. That is a hard assignment, men. Are you living up to it?
  • Get counseling if you need it. This is a bit of advice that was shared with us as newlyweds. There is NO SHAME in seeking professional help with the most important relationship you have next to your relationship with Christ. If your spouse refuses to go, then go alone.
  • Keep Christ at the center of your marriage. I am not going to lie--this one takes work. Pray together. Worship together. Talk about the sermon. Study the Bible together. Or if you can't both go to Bible study, maybe one of you can go and then discuss the lesson with your spouse. As the Bible says in Ephesians 4:12, "a cord of three strands is not quickly broken." The three strands--you, your spouse, and Christ.
  • Seek God's wisdom. Speaking of the Bible--there is some great marital advice to be found there.
  • Learn your spouse's love language--and speak it. See http://www.fivelovelanguages.com/.
  • Pray for each other. I recommend the book The Power of a Praying Wife by Stormie Omartian.
  • Guard your heart. Protect and defend and fight for your marriage. As Johnny Cash might say, walk the line! Don't put yourself in a situation that might even look questionable. Watch how you dress and act. Don't share intimate details with people of the opposite sex. I'm sure you know that many affairs start off as friendships ... as affairs of the heart. I'm not saying you can't be friends with people of the opposite sex, but there is a line that is not to be crossed. There are ministers who refuse to be alone with a woman unless it is his wife. What a great policy. Inconvenient? Yes. Worth it? Absolutely.
So there you have it. What is your marital advice? I am all for receiving some good tips on improving my marriage. I'd love to hear yours!

Mommy Marketing Moment~Hogwash Designs

We've been waiting on pins and needles to feature today's Christian mommy business. We are excited to introduce Nikki and her home based side business out of Virginia, Hogwash Designs. If you need a gift for Easter, Mother's Day or all of those Spring birthday parties, look no further!

You will love Nikki's Sterling Monogrammed Silver Necklaces. I was lucky enough to win one in a giveaway and also purchased one for my mother for Christmas. They are very reasonably priced and such a special gift. We both love them.

She also sells beautiful clothing items for little girls. For those upcoming Spring and Summer portraits, be sure to check out the monogrammed pillowcase dresses made from authentic vintage pillowcases. The monogrammed ponchos that are great for cooler weather.

Two last items you must see are her newly added aprons and monogrammed picture frames. These are also reasonably priced and would be a great treat for yourself or someone you love.

Nikki's site features Paypal so payment transactions are seamless and easy. In my experience, her service has also featured a quick turnaround time and Nikki herself is a pleasure to do business with. Let's hear it for Hogwash Designs!

Today's Savory Smackerel is brought to you by Amanda from My Domestic Disaster. Thank you, Amanda! It looks like the perfect recipe to ensure a restful, aroma filled Sunday. :)

This is actually a Weight Watchers recipe and is really yummy!

Crockpot Lasagna

1/2 Medium Onion

12 oz Lasagna noodles (I used the whole wheat)
16 oz W/W's Shredded Mozzarella Cheese (or any other brand that is reduced fat)

Brown beef with onion. Add spaghetti sauce and cook until warm. Spoon a layer of meat sauce on the bottom of a sprayed crockpot. Add a double layer of uncooked noodles (break to fit) and top with the cheeses. Repeat with the sauce, noodles and cheeses until used up. Cover and cook on low for 4 hours - depending on your crockpot it could be done in less time, just check on it!

1/10 of the pot - 6 points

TNT Tip~Fluffing for Spring!

Today's TNT tip is a GOOD one and it's also brought to you from Amanda over at My Domestic Disaster. If this doesn't get you in the mood for Spring, I don't know what will!

One of my favorite bloggers, Rhoda, from Southern Hospitality, is hosting a linky party. The theme? It's a Spring Fluffing Party! Woohoo! I'm so ready for Spring!

The mission? To find a few areas in our homes and "fluff" them for Spring. Here's what I did.

This is the dining room. I clipped some branches off of my Bradford Pears in the back yard and stuck them in a vase.
They are pretty just by themselves.Or with Easter egg ornaments.

Some Gerbs I found at Dollar Tree. (I think the child proof edge around the hearth adds a nice touch, don't you?) My Southern Living at Home Astoria Canisters

My entry table.

End table. I'm working on repainting the bird that came with this (got it at a garage sale.). I'll put it in or next to the cage when it's done.
Happy Spring!

Beautiful Journal Project for Under $5!

I think there’s nothing better than a handmade gift. In the past, handmade might have made people think of popsicle sticks and macaroni, but these days, handmade can mean meaningful and beautiful. In this post, I am going to walk you through the steps of turning a plain composition book into a personalized work of art for less than $5!
Turn this into....
this! For less than $5!

Step 1: Gather the Supplies

For this project you will need:

1 Composition Book

Scissors

Exacto knife

Some type of glue: I prefer Mod Podge, but there are a lot of products out there. You can even use Elmers if you’d like (just apply a thin coat).

A Cutting Surface: I use a quilting cutting mat, but cardboard will work also. Just be sure to find something that your Exacto knife won’t slice through.

Beautiful Paper: For these photos, you will see that I’ve used all scrapbook paper- you’ll need for 12”x12” pieces for one journal. I prefer the thicker paper and I like to gather all sorts of colors. If you feel uneasy about being able to select a color palette that matches, scrapbook companies make it easy for you! Just get yourself down to the nearest scrapbooking store and you’ll find that piece of scrapbook paper has a whole line of coordinating papers that will match it. It makes it so easy if you’re in a hurry or uncomfortable about pulling together papers that look good together.

One tip I recommend while shopping for any art supplies- only buy things you LOVE. That way, when you get home, you’ll have a stack of paper that delights you! Better to have too many “favorites” to choose from, than not enough :).

Step 2: Selecting the Papers You’ll Use

Each person will develop their own system for selecting paper. Maybe certain papers just remind you of the person you’re making the journal for, or maybe you’ve just fallen in love with a certain pattern or color. You can either choose papers that all match, or you can choose to be funky and eclectic- as long as you love the paper, it will all look great in the end!

Step 3: Gluing and Cutting the Paper

It’s pretty much as easy as it gets when it comes to the rest of the project. You will glue down your first piece of paper. You’ll want to line your paper up to the black binding tape so that none of the original composition book is showing. Be sure to smooth it out there are no air bubbles or wrinkles. You can then move right to the cutting step or choose to let your glue dry.

When you cut your paper, you’ll turn the journal so that you’re looking at the back of the piece of paper and you’ll glide your exacto knife right along the edge of the composition book on all sides. Yup- that’s it! Complete this step with all four sides of the book (front and back covers plus the insides too).

Step 4: Embellish!

This is my favorite part. As I write this, our entire life is on a moving truck making its way to us… that includes all of my fun vintage photos and paper or else I would have embellished these puppies like crazy! The pictures with the birdies and branches are from the scrapbook store and the flower is cut out from a vintage illustration. But there are so many things you can do to personalize each journal:

- Use stamps - Cut out words of a magazine or newspaper
- Use vintage photos of relatives
- Add ribbon or buttons
- Create memento pockets or envelopes with your leftover paper and glue it to the inside cover (if this is a gift, write a letter to the recipient and put it in the envelope for them to discover)
- Glue down bits of fabric (in fact, you can use all fabric!)

- I recently found a vintage map of the state of Oregon, which is where my husband grew up. I gave his journal (a purple composition book) a makeover while he was at work and he when he got home, he loved looking at all the different places he lived and visited as a kid!
- You can even add press
ed flowers

The possibilities are endless! And the results are meaningful, beautiful and affordable!!!!
Have fun!

Here are some more photos from the project:

Thrifty Thursday~ How to Plan for Triples

Harris Teeter is having TRIPLE COUPONS from 7AM Wednesday, March 25th until Midnight Tuesday, March 31st. I still can't believe it's going for the entire week!! Here is a picture from my trip today. I spent $15.53 and SAVED 59.10 (that's 79%)!!

Here you'll find step-by-step instructions on how to plan for triples.

1. Know the store coupon policy. Click here for Harris Teeter's coupon policy.

2. Find the deals. The best place to go is Hot Coupon World (HCW). Scroll down and click on "grocery deals", then select Harris Teeter. You'll see a variety of threads. A thread is simply a topic (like, Harris Teeter FAQ) and then the members post answers to that topic. Think of it as an ongoing conversation. For our situation, we'll pick the threads that talk about triple coupons. To make it easier for you, I'll supply the links for this weeks ads....
Click here for the triples match up
Click here for the ad match up

3. Print the Hot Coupon World Lists. You only need to print the first post from the thread. It is called the "master list" and all of the member input from all the other posts are compiled in that first list. I select the list and print it out for both the triples match up and the weekly ad.

4. Print Internet Printable Coupons. The HCW list will include links to any good IP's. I just click on the links and print those coupons in which I'm interested. I don't have the time or desire to search the entire web for coupons. I only print the ones that HCW has found for me.

5. Make a list and pull coupons. I sit down with my printed HCW lists and decide what I want to buy. When I see an item in which I'm interested I look in my coupon binder to see if I have the coupon. If so, I pull the coupon out of the binder and then I write that item on my Grocery List by Aisle document. I also write the expected HCW final price (after coupons) next to the item. When I'm shopping I like to verify that it is a close price match. Depending on your region of the country the price may vary slightly. This is ok, but it may affect whether you should buy that item.

6. Quickly look for other deals. I quickly glance in my coupon binder to see if there are any high value coupons (.75) that were not mentioned on the HCW lists. If so, I will pull those coupons and add them to my grocery list of things to buy. Because I don't know the sales price of that item I will wait until I'm at the store to see if it's a good deal.

7. Go shopping. I take my Grocery List, all of the coupons that correspond with the list, my coupon binder (in case I see a deal I don't have on the list), and my reusable bags. Note, there is a limit of 20 coupons per day. You may be able to do more than one transaction per day, but this depends on your store. My suggestion, get the best deals on your first trip before the items are sold out!

Please leave a comment if you have a question and I'll be happy to answer it.

Happy Savings!

Wednesday In The Word WAITING

We hate to wait.

It seems with all of our technology and so much information at our fingertips, delivered to us faster than the speed of sound, we have lost the art of waiting. I am a pretty low key person and in earlier years did not mind waiting for answers, people, my turn or anything else that one might have to wait for. However, today is a new day and I am often most impatient about waiting for the things I used to be so patient about. Last night I woke up in the middle of the night and this scripture about waiting was impressed upon me and I knew that it was what God wanted me to write about this week even though I had planned to write something else. Maybe it is for you or maybe it is just for me.

Yet those who wait for the LORD Will gain new strength; They will mount up with wings like eagles, They will run and not get tired, They will walk and not become weary. Isaiah 40:3

I would say that this verse is God's 20/20 on WAITING! You know I am going to look up what the words in this passage mean so here they are:

Wait means bind together by twisting or to expect.
Renew means to change.
Strength means firm.
Run means rush.
Not weary means to not be exhausted or faint.

May I stand on my roof and shout:

For all that bind themselves together in a relationship with God through His Son,Jesus and wait on HIM for directions, they will change their weakness or uncertainty into firm strength and when they are busy rushing around during their days they will not become exhausted and faint.

Praise God!

There have been so many times in my life, especially as a young mother that exhaustion almost made me loss my perspective and just faint. However, it was and is always when I can have the presence of mind to remember who I am in Christ and just be still in my soul and wait on Him for direction or strength I am renewed or changed.

Perhaps you are about to faint. My prayer for you is that you will be still in your soul and allow God to be God. He cares for you, wait for Him. You will be changed and you will not faint.

I love you,
Glenda

Training up Tuesday

I took a piece of plastic clay
And idly fashioned it one day.
And as my fingers pressed it, still
It moved and yielded to my will.

I came again when days were past:
The bit of clay was hard at last.
The form I gave it still it bore,
And I could fashion it no more!

I took a piece of living clay,
And gently pressed it day by day,
And moulded with my power and art
A young child's soft and yielding heart.

I came again when years had gone:
It was a man I looked upon.
He still that early impress bore,
And I could fashion it no more!

~Author Unknown

Does not the potter have power over the clay, from the same lump to make one vessel for honor and another for dishonor? -Romans 9:21

He who fears the Lord has a secure fortress, and for his children it will be a refuge. -Proverbs 14:26

A day of rest

Ladies,

All that comes to mind for today is REST! Take time to rest. As wives and moms we tend to stay busy trying to keep up with it all. The Lord created the world we know in six days and on the seventh rested. Genesis 2:2 By the seventh day God completed His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. If you are spending time on the computer and neglecting the time you have now to sit by your husband and just hang out... go... go where he is and rest by his side. Time that is unscheduled or organized can be good for you and your husband. Think about when you were dating. You went out to the movies, dinner, and just hung out! When is the last time you hung out with you husband? He should be priority over all people and all earthly things. I am not saying we don't need our girlfriends, that is a whole other blog. Enjoy today, for the Lord is coming soon and your time here is short.

Much love from Texas!

TNT Tip: Goodbye Dry Cleaners!

Today's TNT Tip comes from our very own Dolly....

I DETEST ironing shirts! Since I've been married, I've always taken my husband's shirts to the dry cleaners. It's easier, saves time and they always do a great job of getting his shirts so nice and starched. My town has a $1.85 cleaners place that I take his shirts to but it's way on the other side of town. I usually save up a bunch of shirts and take them in when I'm headed that way. Recently, I decided that there is no reason why I can't start ironing during my day at home. (except it may take away some of my computer time). So, here was my project.

Looks fun huh?

My mom gave me this idea...everytime I iron a shirt, I'll put $1.85 into a jar and when I'm finished I'll see all the money I saved. Then, I'll have to go reward myself with a treat. (OK...I added the last part). Wanna join me??!?!

Savory Smackerel

Thank you to our own Donna for today's Savory Smackerel (courtesy of What's for Din-Din). This would be a good recipe to prepare on Saturday evening and have the crockpot all ready to go. Then, all you'll need to do is hit "on" when you get up on Sunday morning and have your first cup of coffee.

Chicken and Carrots with Wine Sauce
This is a tried and true recipe in our house. When whole chickens are on sale at the grocery store, I stock up and make this recipe. It's easy, cooks all day and dinner is ready in a flash! It's good served with rice or mashed potatoes. This recipe is from the Southern Living Slow Cooker Cookbook.

2 Cups sliced carrots (I make mine more into chunks)

1 Whole Chicken

12 Garlic cloves, peeled

1/2 Cup White Cooking Wine

1 tsp. dried Thyme

1/4 tsp. pepper

3/4 tsp. salt

2 T. cornstarch

2 T. water*

Combine carrot, chicken and garlic in a slow cooker. Pour wine over mixture and sprinkle with thyme, salt and pepper. Cover with lid; cook on high setting for 1 hour. Reduce to low-heat setting and cook for 6 hours.

*Remove carrots, chicken and garlic from slow cooker (chicken will be very soft). Keep warm. Reserve liquid in cooker and increase to high-heat setting.

*Combine cornstarch and water and stir until blended. Stir cornstarch mixture into cooking liquid. Cook 15 minutes or until thick, stirring frequently.

Print recipe here.

HAPPY FIRST SATURDAY OF SPRING!!!!

Friday-Free-For-All: Happy 1st Day of Spring!

SPRING!!!! Yippppeeeeee...my very favorite season of all. I love the smell of fresh cut grass, all of the blossoms, blooms and signs of new life...not to mention, being able to break out cooler clothes and flip flops...you name it, I love it.

Spring arriving also means that Easter is close behind! Each Friday, from now until Easter, we would love to share Easter craft ideas for you and your families. Please send them to us along with any pictures at roofwithaview@gmail.com. You will even earn extra entries for our April Giveaway so don't be shy, girls!

To kick off our Spring and Easter fun, I thought I'd share a craft (baking) idea that I've received several of times in email. I've heard the cookies aren't the best cookies you've ever had but it seems like a tangible way of reminding yourself and helping your children understand the meaning behind Jesus conquering the grave.

Easter Resurrection Cookies
(to be made the night before Easter)

Ingredients:
1 cup whole pecans
1 tsp. vinegar
3 egg whites
Pinch salt
1 c. sugar

  • Preheat oven to 300 degrees (important!)

  • Place pecans in zipper baggie and let children beat them with the wooden spoon to break into small pieces. Explain that after Jesus was arrested, He was beaten by Roman soldiers. Read John 19:1-3.

  • Let each child smell the vinegar. Put 1 t. vinegar into mixing bowl. Explain that when Jesus was thirsty on the cross, he was given vinegar to drink. Read John 19:28-30.

  • Add egg whites to vinegar. Eggs represent life. Explain that Jesus gave His life to give us life. Read John 10:10-11.

  • Sprinkle a little salt into each child’s hand. Let them taste it and brush the rest into the bowl. Explain that this represents the salty tears shed by Jesus’ followers, and the bitterness of our own sin. Read Luke 23:27.

  • So far, the ingredients are not very appetizing. Add 1 c. sugar. Explain that the sweetest part of the story is that Jesus died because He loves us. He wants us to know and belong to Him. Read Ps. 34:8 and John 3:16.

  • Beat with a mixer on high speed for 12-15 minutes until stiff peaks are formed. Explain that the color white represents the purity in God’s eyes of those whose sins have been cleansed by Jesus. Read Isaiah 1:18 and John 3:1-3.

  • Fold in broken nuts. Drop by teaspoons onto wax paper covered cookie sheet. Explain that each mound represents the rocky tomb where Jesus’ body was laid. Read Matthew 27:57-60.

  • Put the cookie sheet in the oven, close the door and turn the oven OFF. Give each child a piece of tape and seal the oven door. Explain that Jesus’ tomb was sealed. Read Matthew 27:65-66.

  • GO TO BED!

  • Explain that they may feel sad to leave the cookies in the oven overnight. Jesus’ followers were in despair when the tomb was sealed. Read John 16:20 and 22.

  • On Easter morning, open the oven and give everyone a cookie. Notice the cracked surface and take a bite. The cookies are hollow! On the first Easter, Jesus’ followers were amazed to find the tomb open and empty. Read Matthew 28:1-9.

  • Share the Easter Cookie Story with your friends and email us YOUR ideas!
